A new generation of inverter technology is arising to meet the challenge of partially shaded arrays. Micro-inverter technologies claim increased harvest efficiency based on the generalization that module-based MPPT provides superior harvest compared to string-based MPPT. However, in many cases string-based MPPT from central inverters can result in better harvest efficiency. Dr. Andrew Swingler will present an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on the technical fundamentals of shaded PV array performance, comparing module-based versus string-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) as it relates to optimal harvest efficiency and maximum return on investment.
